Neena Gupta is an actress, director, and producer who has won several awards for her work in both film and television. She rose to fame thanks to her risk-taking roles and great performances. She established her acting career with the films “Woh Chokri” and “Badhaai Ho.” She has contributed to numerous well-known movies. She also played powerful characters.

Bengal is Neena Gupta’s native state. Her birthplace was Kolkata.

She is a hybrid of Punjabi and Baniya culture because her mom is from Punjab and her father is from the Baniya community. She was raised in Delhi’s Karol Bagh neighborhood despite being born in Kolkata. Her father has two boys from a second marriage. She thus had four siblings. The oldest of each of her four siblings is Neena Gupta.

The Father of Neena Gupta was employed at Indian State Trading Corporation Limited. Her mother is a double master’s degree holder in Sanskrit and Political science. She has a sibling who is a Chartered Accountant (CA).

Education

Neena Gupta’s mother reportedly intended for her daughter to work as an IAS officer, but she decided to study cinema, according to sources. Neena Gupta attended Bal Bharti School for her preschool years, followed by Vidya Bhavan for her secondary education. She decided to major in arts for her undergraduate degree at Janki Devi Mahavidyalaya before pursuing her master’s degree in the same field at Delhi University. Sanskrit was her master’s language choice.

Her mother is a Sanskrit master’s degree holder as well. She decided to write her thesis after that and earned the MPhil through Delhi University in the process. She focused on “Stage Techniques in Sanskrit Drama” for her thesis. This makes it clear how interested she is in cinema.

Her Interest in Cinema

She became friends with actor and director Satish Kaushik while she was a student at Delhi University. With Sathish Kaushik’s assistance, she enrolled at the National School of Drama (NSD) in 1977. Neena Gupta graduated in 1980 and finished first in her class. After completing her schooling quickly and with little interruption, she was given the chance to appear in the movie “Mahatma Gandhi.”

Personal Life

First, Neena Gupta wed Amlan Kusum Ghose. When she was sixteen, she was married. He was an IIT-Delhi graduate. Amlan married Neena Gupta while still a student. However, after a year of marriage, they separated for other personal reasons. She then became engaged to Shaarangdev, the son of renowned singer Pandit Jasraj. She later became engaged to the then-cricketer Vivian Richards.

Masaba Gupta, a well-known fashion designer, was born in 1980, a child of Vivian Richards & Neena Gupta. Without getting married, Richards gave birth to Masaba. Neena Gupta hails from a normal Indian family, therefore when Gupta and Richards decided to divorce, it was challenging for her to deal with the family & raise Masaba of her alone. When Vivian Richards first met Neena Gupta, he was already a married man.

The relationship between them did not work out either, so she was left to raise Masaba alone. After that, she married chartered accountant Vivek Mehra. In a secret ceremony, she wed him in the United States. She was raised a Hindu and practices Hinduism.

Speaking of her eating habits, she said in an interview that she is an avid vegetarian and really like Rajma Chawal. She appreciates Lata Mangeshkar, and Amitabh Bachan & Vinod Khanna are two of her favorite actors. Her citizenship is Indian because she was raised in India, and her astrological sign is Gemini. In 1982, Neena Gupta appeared in six different movies, with Gandhi being one of them. Farooq Shaikh and Deepti Naval played the primary roles in her maiden film debut, “Saath Saath,” which was helmed by Raman Kumar. In the categories of Best Actress, Best Actor Female, and Best Actress (Critics), that movie received nominations from Zee Cinema Awards, Filmfare Awards, Lions Gold Awards, and Screen Awards. She took home four prizes including outstanding actress, outstanding female actor, and outstanding couple of the Year.

She additionally received the esteemed Filmfare Award as Best Actress (critics). She produced the film “Panchayat” in 2020, which received nominations for and won the Filmfare OTT Awards that year. The Netflix sitcom “Masaba Masaba,” created by Neena Gupta as her daughter, was also a major success and a Filmfare OTT award nominee.
