The online education field has grown in popularity with working professionals as well as students who are pursuing higher education. Students from these groups appreciate the flexibility and autonomy these courses provide. The online courses are designed to fit into their busy schedules, which could include full-time work, internships and taking care of family. Online learning may also assist students to find some quiet time to work on their studies.

Learning via distance has been in existence for a long time even before the advent of technology made it accessible. Traditional schooling is currently experiencing an increase in the number of virtual learning materials and online courses. In spite of tried and tested educational methods and curricula, most successful schools are ones that adapt to evolving times, and also to the demands of the parents, students and society.

If the trend of online education is to stay, what implications does it have for traditional education? instead of dwelling on the pros as well as cons discussion that needs to be had today is how we can leverage technology to improve our educational system more suitable for learning.

Online courses require greater amount of self-discipline and motivation as opposed to classroom-based courses. In a classroom, there are at least one instructor and students, who make a student accountable to the course work. However, online classes require us to set the goals we want to achieve, keeping track of progress and completing deadlines.

Learning is not effective on their own, therefore online courses offer online discussion forums, email, and individual support. Technology enhances the experience of visuals by incorporating animations that are able to be used to enhance learning and interaction.

The benefit of the classroom

Schools provide the structure, guidance and an incentive system that includes sanctions and rewards for its students. Traditional classroom education provides the benefits of having face-to-face interactions with classmates that are usually moderated by teachers. Children, particularly those who are in their stages of development with a safe setting for social interaction that help them develop skills such as the ability to set boundaries, empathy and co-operation. It also provides the possibility of spontaneity, in contrast to the virtual learning environment.

Online education within the context of schooling

When students move up to higher grades in schools, they are seeking more independence and intellectual freedom. Learning online can allow them to achieve highly personalized learning programmed and, in some cases, college courses. This, when combined with practical exercises, real-world exploration, and rigorous tests, are beneficial to their progress in learning. Students can investigate their options by experimenting with the basics of different areas before choosing an area of study. Learning platforms online can assist students become self-sufficient learners, prior to making their way to colleges. I am of the opinion that we should not discourage students from taking an online course , but instead offer them assistance when they are navigating through the course.

Mobile apps that offer enhanced learning opportunities for students are becoming quite popular in recent times. Since mobile phones have entered their pockets and are utilized to enhance the learning in classrooms. Parents and teachers must serve as mentors and anchors in curating the type of educational materials students are exposed to in this difficult phase of looking for the right profession to pursue.

Virtual public schools that offer full-time K-12 education, have already sprouted up in a few regions around the globe. They also offer a mix of traditional education and online education. There are programs that offer help to families who wish to teach their children at home through online learning materials. These programs can include parents and teachers in the fold, and involve the child’s education right from the start. But their efficacy in the long-term is something that needs to be examined.

Online learning programs can provide opportunities to children in the most disadvantaged socio-economic communities, who are unable to access to educational resources i.e. teachers Text books, infrastructure, and teachers. They will be connected to a global community of learners online, and expose the students to fresh perspectives. The information they get will not be restricted by the number heads in a classroom.

Internet education is for teachers

Education online is also able to be developed to accommodate various ways of learning for students. As educators, it’s likely that we’ll need to make additional efforts to incorporate online learning courses into our program in the most effective way.

Online training courses aid teachers and educators to improve their knowledge of curriculum development policies, educational systems, and leadership, both on their own and with the assistance by their organizations. They can work with colleagues and acquire new teaching skills relevant to their profession. These programs will help them build new capabilities and skills for their students through the aid of technology and inter-disciplinary approaches.

Since the interplay between traditional and digital modes of learning is becoming increasingly commonplace We owe it to our students to help them make their education relevant to their future by using creativity, enthusiasm and thoughtful planning.
